Charter public schools initiative under review

Proponents of charter public schools have filed an initiative bid with the Secretary of State, and Washington State PTA members may ask whether the association supports the effort. (See 11th hour filing)

Nationally, PTA has qualified support for charter public schools. And Washington State PTA is actively looking for ways to close our state's entrenched achievement gaps. We are supportive of choice and innovative schools – including charter public schools when they reflect the positions and principles of PTA.

At this point, staff is reviewing the initiative to see if it aligns with WSPTA criteria. The charter proponents who filed the initiative have told us it improves upon on a bill introduced to the legislature this past session. We had concerns with that bill and could not fully support it. (Key points noted below. See also, Grassroots Connection: Feedback on SB 6202)

Once staff's review is complete, the legislative director and president will give it to our newly installed board, as well as our new regional legislative chairs. (New WSPTA Board members took office June 1.) The board will need time to both learn about the issue and engage with their respective PTA communities.

Save our funding! Wednesday June 6

Please bring a plate of cookies or cut fruit to share; all children must be accompanied by adults.

Ice-Cream Social

Please come to the Ice-Cream Social, Awards Ceremony and General PTA Meeting tonight from 6:30 to 8:30!!

We will be awarding the Golden Acorn Awards for some of our amazing volunteers, the Outstanding Educator Awards, and elect our PTA officers for the coming school year.

The evening begins at 6:30 on the lower playground, and delicious ice-cream will be served after the General PTA Meeting.  Kids and Adults are all welcome!

Legislative update

4/11/2012

The House and Senate have finally passed a supplemental operating budget, including last-minute bills that were deemed necessary for the budget. Some details are available at http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2017950849_apwaxgrbudget.html.

One of the sticking points involved a health care bill for K-12 employees. A compromise version of the bill was passed at 4:20 a.m., and according to the NEA most legislators didn't have time to read it before voting on it. The public also didn't have a chance to comment. For more information, see http://ourvoicewashingtonea.org/legislators-approve-confusing-k-12-health-care-bill/.
